Chow chow avaraikai sambar

Sambar is the staple dish in southern India. Its made using lentils and veggies.
My mom used to do this twice a week.
It tastes good with breakfast like idly,dosa also taste well with steamed rice.


I know most of you know this recipe but thought it might help someone(beginners) so sharing here. Also there are many types of sambar are available. This is basic method.

Hope you too love it and give it a try also don't forget to share your experience.


Preparation time:10 minutes
Cooking time:20minutes
Serves :4-5

Ingredients:

Toor dal/thuvaram paruppu 1/2cup
Moong dal/paasi paruppu 1/4cup
Chayote/chow chow 1peeled and cubed
Avaraikai 5-6
Onion/periya vengayam 1medium chopped finely
Tomato 2chopped roughly
Garlic 4big cloves
Turmeric powder 1/2teaspoon
Sambar powder 1tablespoon
Asafoetida 1/4teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil 1tablespoon

Tempering:

Oil 2 tablespoon
Mustard 1 teaspoon
Urad dal 1 teaspoon
Shallots/chinna vengayam 10 chopped finely
Curry leaves a spring

Method:
Pressure cook both the dals and set aside.
Heat oil in a kadai add in onion and saute it till it turns translucent.
Add in tomatoes and saute it till it turns mushy.
Add in veggies and saute it till it leaves raw smell.
Add in turmeric powder and sambar powder. Mix it well and add in water and garlic.
Cover with lid and cook till veggies gets cooked.
Once veggies get cooked add in cooked dal to it.
Add in asafetida and salt . Allow it to boil for 5minutes in low flame.
Heat oil in a kadai and add all the ingredients given under tempering.
Add this to sambar thats it.
Serve hot with steamed rice.

Stepwise pictures:

Pressure cook both the dals and set aside.

Heat oil in a kadai.

Add in onion and saute it till it turns translucent.

 Add in tomatoes.


Saute it till it turns mushy.

Add in avaraikai.

Add in chayote/chow chow and saute it till it leaves raw smell.

Add in turmeric powder.

Add in sambar powder and mix it well.


Add in water and garlic. Cover it and cook till veggies gets cooked.

Add in cooked dals and mix well.

Add in asafetida and mix it well.

Add in salt to taste.

Heat oil in another small kadai.

Add in mustard and urad dal.

Add in curry leaves.

Add in shallots.

Saute it till it turns translucent.

Add tempering to sambar.

Serve it hot with steamed rice.

Notes:

I used chayote and avaraikai,you can use any veggies.
I used toor and moong dal,you can use toor dal alone.
