Vazhaipoo urundai biryani

Happy world food day for all food lovers...!!! Today's recipe is Vazhaipoo urundai biryani/banana flower balls biryani. Sounds weird right? I am also stunned and thought whether it tastes good.


I searched in google but I couldn't see any recipes like that. Then I get in mood to try it as its a different recipe. I got to know this recipe from a book but changed a bit for my taste.

It tastes just awesome. Hope you too love it and give it a try also don't forget to share your experience with me.

Preparation time:15minutes.
Cooking time:20 minutes.
Serves:3 to 4

Ingredients:

For Vazhaipoo urundai/banana flower balls:

  • Banana flower/vazhaipoo 1medium sized(cleaned)(for more details Click here)
  • Ginger 1inch piece
  • Garlic 6pods
  • Grated coconut 1tablespoon
  • Fennel seeds/sombu 1/2teaspoon
  • Roased gram/pottukadalai 1/2cup
  • Green chilli/red chilli 2
  • Onion/periya vengayam 2
  • Oil for deep fry
  • Salt to taste
  • Hing/asafoetida/perungayathool 1/2teaspoon

For biryani:

  • Biryani rice 2cups(I used seeraga samba)
  • Cinnamon 1inch piece
  • Cardamom/elaichi 1
  • Clove/krambu 1
  • Coriander leaves a hand full
  • Onion/periya vengayam 2 medium sized sliced
  • Tomatoes 3 medium sized finely chopped
  • Coconut milk 2cups+1cup water
  • Ginger garlic paste 
  • Green chilli 3
  • Cinnamon powder 1tablespoon
  • Garam masala 1/2teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 2tablespoon
  • Ghee 1tablespoon

Method:

Clean Vazhaipoo/banana flower(for more details Click here)
Take this in a blender and blend it coarsely.
Add all the ingredients given in the vazhaipoo urundai except oil.
Make it into balls and deep fry it in medium flame so that it gets cooked well.
Wash and soak rice for 10minutes.
In a meanwhile, Heat oil in a cooker.
Add in cinnamon stick,cardamom,clove.
Let them splutters. Add in onion and saute till it turns translucent.
Add in ginger garlic paste,green chilli and coriander leaves and tomatoes. Give a good mix. Add in salt.
Add in coconut milk with a cup of water.
Add cinnamon powder,garam masala powder.
Allow it to boil and add drained rice.
Cook for 1whistle and simmer it for 5minutes.
Let the air escapes itself.
Take this in a big bowl and add in fried balls and mix well.
Serve it with raita.

Take this in a blender and blend it to a coarse paste.

Add in roasted gram.

Add in fennel seeds.

Add in grated coconut.

Add in garlic.

Add in ginger.

Add in chilli.

Add in onion.

Blend it to a smooth paste.

Add in salt.

Add in asafoetida.

Mix it well using your hands.

Shape them into balls.

Deep fry it.

You can have as it is(snacks).

Wash and soak the rice for 10 minutes.
Heat ghee in pressure cooker.

Add in oil.

Add in cinnamon, cardamom, clove.

Add in onion and saute it till it turns translucent.

Add in ginger garlic paste.

Add in green chilli(as I didn't have in hands,I used red chilli)

Add in coriander leaves.

Add in tomatoes and cook till it turns mushy.

Add in salt.

Add in coconut milk with water.

Bring it to boil.

Add in cinnamon powder.

Add in garam masala and mix it well.

Add drained rice and cook it for 1 whistle and simmer it for 5 minutes.

Take this in wide bottomed bowl.

Add fried balls and mix well.

Serve with raita.
